Nepali Congress and agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) is scheduled to take place at PM’s official residence Baluwatar on Monday.The meeting was called by Prime Minister KP Oli in a bid to address the demands of the Madhesi parties and end the current political deadlock.

Liquor ban demand gains momentum in Rajasthan

The call for a blanket ban on liquor in Rajasthan is gaining intensity after the death of an anti-liquor campaigner in the state and Bihar chief minister’s declaring his state dry from the next year.



Liquor is the root cause of dwindling household economy and domestic and social violence across the state as it is elsewhere. To press for its ban, former Rajasthan lawmaker and social activist Gurusharan Chabbra had gone on a hunger strike since October 2 at Gandhi Circle in Jaipur. Earlier in July, he had written to chief minister Vasundhara Raje demanding a ban on liquor. However, he died on November 3 at the Sawai Mansingh Hospital after a 32-day long stir. This became one of the causes of social organisations’ demand for a blanket ban on liquor in Rajasthan. Lok Sangarsh Morcha secretary Sawai Singh said, “Prohibition on liquor will not only put a stop on the crime rate in the state, (but also help) save the money.” “The state government should do it if it is serious about the welfare of the people. Chabbra ji’s sacrifice should not go in vain,” he said. Gurusharan Chabbra daughters-in-law Pooja and Poonam have now decided to carry forward the anti-liquor crusade, Poonam said, “Even if the government cannot order a complete ban on liquor, then it should at least fulfil its promise that was made in the past.” Many Muslim organisations, such as Jamat-e-Islami Hind, express their solidarity with the call for liquor ban in Rajasthan and hail Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s decision in this respect. Jamat-e-Islami Hind Rajasthan secretary Mohammed Iqbal Siddiqui said that people’s health should be the top priority for any government than revenue. “Development with the liquor money is a shameful concept and Raje should put a ban on liquor,” he suggested.

Successive inaction by the central government and complicity by local officials allows child marriage, including of very young girls, to continue unchecked, while Bangladesh’s high vulnerability to natural disasters puts more girls at risk as their families are pushed into the poverty that helps drive decisions to have girls married.

A Nepal police constable, who deserted his service taking along with him two guns, was arrested in Sundhara on Sunday.Chhota Lal Thakur, 26, of Ahabi-8 Bara was arrested from a guest house in Sundhara along two pistols including a Chinese pistol and seven round of bullets.


Thakur sustained bullet injuries in his leg whatpolice explained was in retaliatory action after he pulled out a weapon during the police raid. According to the Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Thakur was rushed to Bir Hospital and is undergoing treatment.

Thakur had taken along with him a Self-Loading Rifle and a pistol while deserting the police service. In his statement to police, Thakur claimed that he had already sold the SLR to Sunil Jaiswal, a leader of Tarai outfit and former APF constable. Jaiswal was arrested two years ago and is doing time in jail. “Thakur was also involved in numerous abduction and extortion cases in Nepal and India,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Sarbendra Khanal, chief of Crime Division.Thakur, who has been active in smuggling weapons to and from Nepal and India, was also involved in a murder in Motihari, India, police said.Along with Thakur, Raj Kumar Patel, 36, of Rautahat has also been arrested.Police are looking for Patel’s possible involvement in any sort of crimes.

Itahari locals vandalise dais meant for UDMF mass meet

Locals today vandalised and set ablaze the dais prepared by the United Democratic Madhesi Front for a mass meeting in Itahari, Sunsari. Following the locals’ protest, leaders affiliated to UDMF were not able to attend the mass meeting.

According to Sunsari Police, local youths stormed the UDMF meeting venue, ransacked the dais and set it ablaze while UDMF cadres were arranging chairs on the stage.

After vandalism and arson, agitating youths burnt tyres on all four points of the street and staged demonstration in Itahari. They shouted slogans against the One-Madhes-One-Pradesh and demanded to keep Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari in Province No 1. They said they would allow UDMF to organise any programme in Itahari.

Hundreds of police personnel were deployed to avert any untoward incident. SP Sanjay Raj Sharma of Sunsari said despite ruling parties’ directive to their sister organisations not to foil the UDMF’s programme, party cadres and local youths resorted to vandalism and arson. “Vandalism and arson do not bode well for the communal harmony,” said Sharma.

After the violent incident, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur, Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav and Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato were not able to attend the programme in Itahari as scheduled earlier.

UDMF cadres set up another stage at the site where the first stage was torched and local leaders addressed the programme at around 3:00pm.

Federal Limbuwan Party Chairman Kumar Lingden was among those who spoke at the programme. He said locals had made a mistake by blocking UDMF leaders from attending the programme in Itahari. “This agitation is for the rights of everyone.

Four days after Manoj Sharma’s 6-year-old son first fell ill with dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease rampant in urban India, his body showed signs of shock: a plunging platelet count, vomiting and labored breathing. At 2 a.m. on Sept.



13, Mr. Sharma suffered a shock of his own, learning that the private clinic that had given his son a vital platelet transfusion — with a $182 bill — lacked the resources to provide further treatment.
He spent the next three hours ferrying his wife and son on the back of his scooter to different hospitals that he said were unable, because of overcrowding, to treat the boy.Finally, the nonprofit Holy Family Hospital admitted his son, Aman, who spent several hours in the intensive care unit but ultimately died. All told, Mr. Sharma had taken his son to five hospitals in six days, secured two platelet transfusions and a stay in an intensive care unit, paying about 70,000 rupees — around $1,100 — with loans from his mother and brother.
