Chiranjeevee Pokhrel for DC Nepal, November 22, 2015 – The refugees at Nepal have come under protest as UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) has stopped providing their regular allowances since a year. The refugees are waiting in front of the UNHCR office saying there is no alternative to stay waiting in front of the commission’s gate. A Pakistani Refugee Rafal Fatema says, “We don’t have food here to eat and so we stay here; we don’t have lights also.” She adds, “They always come to us and tell us not to stay here as they provide us the settlement. We have nothing to eat. How can we survive?” The refugees are unable to hold any income generating jobs legally and have no other alternatives to live their lives except the allowance that UNHCR used to give. This time, the allowance has not been flown for a complete year. They cannot buy fuel like kerosene, LP gas and even firewood. Accordingly, Sri Lankan Refugee Janaka Aayakan says, “If we go to buy firewood, they ask citizenship. That is big problem.” He adds, “We can eat only if there is electricity. If there is load-shedding , we cannot eat.”
